When John Lennon and Yoko Ono sung the lines to their single ‘Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' in December 1971, war was raging in Vietnam and the Christmas spirit of harmony and brotherhood became the perfect carrier for the anti-war campaign started by the duo. Talking of rock music and Christmas in the same breath seems a bit paradoxical, since rock as a culture is stereotyped by the oft quoted phrase, ‘sex, drugs and rock ‘n' roll' which would probably read as ‘lust, gluttony and wrath' to the devout Christian! But then, stereotypes are meant to be rubbished. Rock music has thrived as a voice for the underprivileged and the working class to air their disgruntled opinion about war, politics, and the social problems they face. A lot of songs are full of hope for a better tomorrow. And Christmas most definitely is a celebration of hope that good might prevail. Rock songs with Christmas as their theme are rare but playing them would certainly push up the novelty value of your Christmas party music. Some of the top bands over the years have composed Christmas themed songs, which became hits.
